The Cowal Peninsula

In the most southern part of the Scottish highlands just an hour north west of the city of Glasgow lies the Cowal Peninsula. Accessible by ferry from Gourock or by road via the "Rest and be Thankful", it is a mountainous region which includes the Arrochar Alps, boasting five Munros, (mountains with a height of over 3000ft) and approximately thirty other mountains of various heights.

KYLES OF BUTE

The peninsula is bordered by Loch Fyne to the west and Loch Long to the east. On the southern part of the peninsula land forks are formed by the incisions of the Kyles of Bute, Loch Striven & Loch Riddon (also known as Loch Ruel). The Kyles separate Cowal from the Isle of Bute and lend a magnificent sheltered waterway for sailing boats.  There are two other sea lochs on the peninsula, Loch Goil, which is an arm of Loch Long and Holy Loch, a small loch on the Firth of Clyde coast.  My studio is on the banks of Holy Loch.

LOCH ECK REFLECTIONS

Loch Eck and Loch Tarsan are Freshwater lochs. I believe Loch Eck to be one of Scotland's most beautiful lochs, often referred to as mirror Loch, for the immaculate reflections seen on the sheltered water. Loch Eck is the natural habitat of one of Scotland's rarest freshwater fish, the Powan. This fish is endemic to only two lochs, Loch Eck and Loch Lomond.  Loch Tarsan is situated in the scenic Glen Lean and is popular for fly fishing. (Brown Trout).

BENMORE

The coastline of the Cowal Peninsula is rocky with an array of wildlife including dolphins, seals and otters. Plenty of seabirds provide a super spot for bird watching and just inland from the coast we find red deer, red squirrels and pine martins. The Benmore Botanic Gardens has 120 acres to explore and is home to an impressive collection of world famous trees and plants. Looking to photograph red squirrels, then this is the place to be.

HIGHLAND DANCERS

The largest town on the peninsula is Dunoon and is home to the annual Cowal Highland Gathering held in August. Pipe bands, dancers and athletes from all over the world come to compete in the games. It truly is a festival of Scottish culture, locally sourced food, music and so much more. It’s an unbeatable event for all the family.
